Nice large title page from "Italiae, Sclavoniae, et Graeciae tabule geographice" by Gerard Mercator (1512-1594).

In folio, verso blank.

The page is designed as a classical architecture: a pediment, columns, a sculpted base, in the manner of the title pages of Flemish atlases from the 17th century. We find two Ionic or Corinthian columns, dyed in pink and gold. They symbolize the solidity of geographical knowledge. A richly decorated pediment with bright colors, inspired by ancient temples. A central cartouche contains the title of the book, which is a visual "gateway" to the atlas. There are two angels at the top. Each holds a laurel crown, a symbol of victory, glory, and intellectual excellence. They refer to the fame of Mercator, considered a scholar and an innovator. In the laurel wreath, an antique-looking head or bust symbolizes the wisdom of the Ancients, the Greco-Roman foundations of geography. It is a direct homage to Ptolemy, father of scientific cartography, that Mercator republished. Under the pediment, a small winged angel or mascaron adorns the architecture. This type of ornament, very common in baroque engravings, is an apotropaic symbol, that is to say protective. The figures on the base represent hybrid creatures. At the bottom, on either side of the lower cartridge, are two anthropomorphic creatures, maintaining a decorative frame. They symbolize the mastery of waters and seas, the role of cartography in navigation, the maritime scope of Flemish atlases.
