The frontispiece is a magnificent example of the mannerist ornamentation of the late 16th century, with volutes and tracery, stylized architectural decorations, ribbons, profusion of fruits, flowers, and foliage.The two winged angels at the start of the great arch are typical of the humanist iconography of this time. The two stylized animals resembling lizards or salamanders are common in Flemish cartographic ornaments. Fruits, leaves and plant motifs We observe pomegranates, stylized flowers. These elements represent the fertility and richness of the mapped territory. They are borrowed from the Italian mannerist decorative repertoire and bring a visual harmony typical of Mercator’s frontispieces. The central cartouche, of architectural style, composed of frames of different colors, decorative patterns, symmetrical volutes highlights the scientific dimension of the work.
