Maurice Canning Wilks was born in 1910 in Belfast. He was the son of a linen designer and attended evening classes at the Belfast College of Art. At the age of 19, he won a scholarship that allowed him to study there full-time. Living in Cushendun, Co. Antrim Wilks was a landscape painter, depicting the west and north of rural Ireland including Donegal and Kerry. He was an associate member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin where he exhibited works between 1933 and 1979. In addition, Wilks became a full member of the Royal Ulster Academy and showed works at the Waddington Gallery, Dublin. Examples of his work can be found in various public collections including the Ulster Museum and the Office of Public Works, Dublin.
