Very large antique copper engraved map of Oceania, centered on Australia, by Auguste-Henri DUFOUR (1798-1865).
The map presents 4 inset maps in lower part: a map of New Wales in southern Australia, New Caledonia, Marquisas, Tahiti, Gambier islands. The different colors on the map defines the possessions of different countries: pink for Great Britain, purple for Spain, blue for France, white for Lower Countries or Portugal.
The map is engraved by C. Dyonnet.

Adolphe Hippolyte Dufour (1798-1865) is a French geographer. He studied with Lapie and worked with him on several charts of the Navy Depot. In 1824, he published for the first time, under his sole name, a geographical analysis of the map of Palestine and took part from that moment on in a host of historical or topographical publications for which he drew up plans and maps.
