In poor condition. As is. All boards are detached from bindings. All leather spines lacking - a few pieces of leather remain at head of Vols. I, II & V. Volume labels partially intact on Vols. V & VIII. Head bands lacking on Vols. III, IV & X. Leather boards are all moderately chipped at edges & corners; gilt bordering chipped & dulled. Leather is dried & brittle; prone to chipping. All edges of all text-blocks red marbled (dulled). Some marbled end-pages exhibit some chipping & are detached with boards. Previous ownership bookplates found on all front paste-downs: "James Madison Abney." Ink marginalia found on all volumes front fly-leaves (verso) with title & volume number. Below typed name on bookplates are ink signatures: "John Rutledge Abney." Normal age-related toning throughout text-blocks; with instances of finger-soiling and age-staining. Frontispiece in Vol. I has caused some off-setting on adjacent title page. Fold-out chart in Vol. I is toned around creases & exhibits a small tear at right fore-edge, where fold-out meets text-block. A complete set - all reading copies. Perfect candidate for restoration. James Madison Abney (1827 - 1889) married Martha Livingsoton on 21 December 1848 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. She was the daughter of Daniel and Karen Happuch Smith Livingston.
James Madison Abney and Martha Livingston appeared as head of household on a census enumerated 19 December 1850 in Edgefield District, South Carolina. The household was listed as James Abney, 24, farmer, with real estate valued at $1,000. His wife, Martha, was 26. They had one child, John R. Abney, one year old. All were born in South Carolina. Living next door was Jacob Pope Abney.
James began military service at age 34 on 5 December 1861 in Edgefield County, South Carolina, as corporal in company D, 19th South Carolina Infantry. He surrendered wiith the regiment 26 Apr 1865 at High Point, North Carolina. He was paroled 1 May 1865 at Greensboro.
