Euro metal pioneers Oz were originally formed in Nakilla, a small town in Finland, in 1977. The band consisted of Mark Ruffneck (real name Pekka Mark) on drums, lead vocalist Ape De Martini (Eero Hämäläinen by real name), bassist Tauno Vajavaara and Kario Elo on guitar. It took the four Fins five years to come up with the material for their legendary debut album. With raw heavy metal anthems such as “Saturday Night”, “Capricorn Man” or the sleazy “Second-Hand Lady” Oz were quickly hailed as Scandinavia’s heavy metal band no.1 (well ahead of Heavy Load). In Finland, the album was issued under the name of »Oz« on Kräk! Records (KRÄLP 12) in 1982, with a striking live photograph on the front cover (complemented by further live shots on the back). The original pressing came complete with a lyric sheet. The album had been recorded and mixed at Decibel Studios in Stockholm, Sweden. It was produced by Börje Forsberg, aka The Boss, for his company Tyfon Grammofon AB (the predecessor of Black Mark Production) and engineered by a certain Acke Gardebäck. On the back of the album sleeve it also said: “album design/recording ideas: Tomas ‘Ace’ Forsberg”. Of course, this was the son of Börje Forsberg, who went on to write metal history with his project Bathory just a little while later under the pseudonym of Quorthon. In Sweden, the album was issued with an alternative sleeve (just a plain black cover with the title on it in white letters) under the somewhat strange name of »Heavy Metal Heroes – Hey You« (with “Hey You” being the opening song of the record for both editions). With the success of the album not only in Finland (but all over continental Europe), Oz decided to permanently move to Stockholm, a much larger city than their original hometown, in order to follow a professional recording career. In a special story on “Heavy Metal in Finland” in Rock Hard magazine (Germany) drummer Pekka Mark remarked: “Our first album was released in Sweden and in Finland, it was also exported to a few other countries at the time. The record sold pretty well and as a result our gigs in our home country became much more frequent. That’s typical for Finland – you need to be successful in a foreign country first before being recognized at home.”

OZ - THE OZ

Oz is a pioneering Finnish Heavy Metal band that formed in the late 1970s and became one of the first Finnish metal acts to sign an international record deal, establishing themselves as key players in the early European metal movement.1 Initially founded in Nakkila, Finland, the band’s sound was heavily rooted in the raw, energetic traditions of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), mixing the attitude of Motörhead and Venom with the polished melodicism of bands like Judas Priest. The core lineup for their early releases included drummer Mark Ruffneck, bassist Tauno "Pepe" Laakso, and vocalist Esa "Oz" Holopainen, who later handled drums for the Fire in the Brain album. The band relocated to Sweden early in their career, which allowed them to secure better touring and recording opportunities, effectively making them a bridge between the Finnish and Swedish metal scenes.2

The album The Oz, released in 1982 on the Tyfon Grammofon label, is the band's highly collectible debut full-length record.3 Though simply titled, it immediately showcases the band's raw power and proto-speed metal tendencies. The music on the album is characterized by simple, direct, hard-hitting riffs, driving rhythms, and a raw, garage-like production that perfectly encapsulates the gritty spirit of early 1980s metal. Tracks like "Hey You," "Call From Your Eyes," and "Runnin' The Line" are direct, high-energy heavy metal anthems that often feature straightforward lyrical themes of rock and roll life and rebellion.

Following their raw debut, Oz would gain greater prominence with subsequent albums, particularly the classic Fire in the Brain (1983), which offered a more refined sound while retaining the core aggression of their debut.4 However, The Oz remains a crucial document, establishing the foundation of their style and serving as a key benchmark for the early, often aggressive Scandinavian metal sound that predated the region's later dominance in extreme metal subgenres. Its rarity and historical position as one of the earliest internationally distributed Finnish metal albums have cemented its cult status among collectors of NWOBHM and 80s European metal obscurities.

The album's enduring value lies in its authenticity as a foundational artifact of the genre. It captures a moment when heavy metal was still finding its form, existing somewhere between the hard rock of the 70s and the speed metal of the mid-80s. Collectors often seek out the original 1982 vinyl pressing due to its historical significance and the distinct sound of its original mix. The material on The Oz is a testament to the early global reach of heavy metal, proving that the energy and aggression of the New Wave of Heavy Metal was not confined to the UK, but was erupting in underground scenes across Europe, particularly in the Nordic countries.
