Authentic John Hood Co. (Boston) farrier’s hoof leveler / hoof balance gauge, manufactured in the late 1800s–early 1900s. This tool was used by farriers to measure the angle and balance of a horse’s hoof to ensure proper trimming and shoeing.

Features include:
Stamped measurement scale on the arm
Pivoting indicator blade
Thumb-screw adjustment
• Original early forged/steel construction
• Matching the known pattern of John Hood’s patented hoof-leveling instruments

Condition:

We deliberately did not clean it and all parts are usable/moveable.  Tool shows age, patina, and wear consistent with use. Joints move freely, pointer arm adjusts properly, and the stamped gradations are still visible. No breaks or repairs.

A solid example of an early American farrier’s measurement tool — great for equine tool collectors, veterinary history, farmhouse décor, or primitive tool displays.
