Luxembourg Thionville Siege Sebastian Münster Antique Map 1544
Title: Original 1544 Hand-Colored Woodcut Print: Luxembourg and Thionville (Diedenhofen) with Siege Scene
Description:
A highly important and scarce original woodcut leaf from the German edition of Sebastian Münster's seminal work, the Cosmographia, published circa 1544. This sheet details two crucial historical cities in the Low Countries/Lorraine region:
Lützelburg (Luxemburg,): The text describes the land as having been initially raised to a Lordship and then a County, later elevated to a Duchy. It traces the history of the Dukes of Luxemburg, noting its eventual transfer to the House of Burgundy and later to the Holy Roman Emperor Karlen (Charles V). The text is accompanied by a large woodcut of the Luxemburg Coat of Arms (a lion rampant).
Diedenhofen (Thionville): The lower portion features a striking, hand-colored city plan and siege scene titled "Diedenhofen Thionoville". (France) This compelling view depicts the surrounding of the city's fortification (vestung) by a powerful army (Kriegsvolk). The text recounts that the city was besieged and later conquered, with the surrounding lands being devastated by the soldiers. The print visually emphasizes the circular fortifications and the presence of numerous army tents (Zelt/Lager).
This historical antique map is printed on handmade paper and vividly documents the constant state of war and territorial conflict that characterized this part of Europe in the 16th century.
