This is an authentic Roman coin issued by Vitellius in the year 69 AD, known as the year of the 4 emperors.
Nero's death ignited a new civil war, where four generals were fighting for the throne; Galba, Otho, Vitellius and Vespasianus. By the end of the year only one has survived, Vespasianus, who had become the new emperor, starting the Flavian dynasty.
This Vitellius coin has a stunning portrait on the observe, roughly an XF conditions, while on the reverse, quality is slightly lower, there is a Victory seated with no legends around. A great iridescent patina with colours going from yellow to blue underlines the portrait quality.
This is RIC 71 and it is a rare issue, quoted on the latest SEAR at £400 in VF.
As you can see this is going far up the VF grade especially the portrait, so the price reflects the great quality of this authentic coin.
