This is a exceptional American Indian Peace Medal that was issued by the French most likely during the French & Indian War era of the 1750s. The medal was awarded to chiefs and half-chiefs of the Iroquois, Ottawas and Oneida who performed a service of merit for the French. The Indians valued these peace medals very highly as a mark of rank and high prestige. The medal was also worn as a badge of friendship between the French and Indians.
