Title: Graeciae Antiquae – Graeciae Septentrionalis & Graeciae Pars Meridionalis by Guillaume de L’Isle, 1742
Subtitle: Original 18th-Century Double Map of Ancient Northern & Southern Greece
Description (EN):
This rare double set of 18th-century maps by Guillaume de L’Isle presents Ancient Greece in two large engraved sheets, showing both the Northern region (Graeciae Septentrionalis) and the Southern region (Graeciae Pars Meridionalis). Published by Covens & Mortier in Amsterdam in 1742, the maps were taken from the celebrated Atlas Nouveau.
Both maps are richly hand-colored, with a remarkable feature: the coloring scheme flows from one sheet into the other, unifying the set.
The northern map covers Macedonia, Epirus, and Thrace, extending into the Balkans, while the southern map includes the Peloponnese, the Cyclades, and Crete, complete with elaborate cartouches.
Mapmaker – Guillaume de L’Isle (1675–1726):
A leading figure of the French School of Cartography, De L’Isle was admitted to the Académie Royale des Sciences at age 27 and later became Premier Géographe du Roi in 1718. His works were notable for their scientific accuracy and were widely reissued by leading European publishers.
