Tinted stipple engraving of George Washington - after French black and white stipple engraving by unknown artist and publisher. bust to right, head to left. circle in rectangular plate. Lettered below oval image: "Premier President de Etats-Unis d. Amerique". c 1800. [Hart 851; Baker 282]. Plate 7 1/2 x 6 1/2; sheet 11 1/4 x 7 3/4"; oval 5 1/4" dia. Excellent condition, top/bottom deckled edges; slight age appropriate toning and fading. Some versions include further lettering including birth and death dates and publisher address. Hart notes that this pose is similar to that of a line engraving by Giuseppe Longhi (1766-1831) which appeared in "Lives and Portraits of 100 Illustrious Men"; publ Bertoni, Padua, 1817. [Hart 841]. Also similar to a smaller line engraving publ by Blaisot [Hart 852]. Hampton L Carson in his "Collection of Engraved Portraits of General Washington" (1904), records both the b&w version [523] and "The Same - beautifully printed in colors with full margin" [524]. The b&w version is held by the Library of Congress with no attributions. The only color version I have found with similar lettering is held by the Franco-American Museum of the Chateau of Blerancourt, France. RARE
