This vintage matchbook features a striking full-color image of the Aquarama, once known as the “Queen of the Great Lakes.” Originally built in 1945 as a World War II troopship named the Marine Star, she was later purchased in the 1950s by Sand Products Corporation, extensively rebuilt, and relaunched in 1955 as the Aquarama, the largest passenger ship on the Great Lakes at the time. Operating out of Detroit and Cleveland, the Aquarama offered luxury cruising with restaurants, ballrooms, and entertainment, catering to postwar vacationers eager for modern leisure travel. Despite her grandeur, competition from automobiles, highways, and airlines limited her service life, and by the early 1960s she was retired from regular passenger duty. She later sat idle for years, making occasional appearances before eventually being sold for scrap in the 2000s. The matchbook itself, produced by the Match Corp. of America in Chicago, serves as both advertisement and souvenir, capturing the sleek profile of the vessel and the optimism of mid-century Great Lakes travel. Today, the Aquarama is remembered as a symbol of an era when passenger liners represented both luxury and regional pride, and matchbooks like this one preserve that maritime legacy in a tangible way.
