Maria Tiro (1931/12/23-2025/2/10), one of Italy's leading pianists, recorded a series of works including Bach and D. Scarlatti for the EMI label from 1986 onwards. Given her high reputation and relatively few recordings prior to this, these became irreplaceable recordings for many fans.

Among these, her “Goldberg Variations” performance, elegant and rich in improvisational flair, remains highly esteemed to this day.

For this release, marking the first domestic release since 2006, the SACD master was newly created from the original digital master in Italy.

SACD layer and CD layer were mastered separately.

Maria Tipe studied piano under her mother, a student of Busoni. She first gained attention when, still in her late teens, she won second prize (with no first prize awarded) in the piano category of the 10th Geneva International Competition in 1948 (she was just shy of 17 at the time). She then won first prize at the same competition the following year.

The Geneva International Competition's piano category is known as a gateway for world-class artists, with winners including Michelangeli in the first edition, F. Gulda in the eighth, and Argerich in 1957. Her determination in piano is evident in her decision to challenge again the following year after placing second, ultimately winning first prize.

Following her American debut in 1950, her global engagements increased, and her fame grew with several recordings.

However, from the 1960s onward, she limited her concert activities, reducing her opportunities to connect with listeners. In Japan, in particular, she seemed to become almost estranged.

Amidst this, her activities gradually increased from the 1970s. Recordings for Italian labels Ricordi and Cetra gradually gained attention. From 1986 through the mid-1990s, she primarily contracted with EMI. Important recordings, including this “Goldberg Variations,” were produced, further elevating her reputation.

She also visited Japan in 1986 and the following year.

Tiepolo's piano playing was highly regarded by fellow pianists, and it is well known that he received enthusiastic praise from Rubinstein, Argerich, and others.

His interpretations of D. Scarlatti, J.S. Bach, Mozart, and Chopin were particularly outstanding, glimpses of his brilliance visible in the few recordings that remain.

This “Goldberg Variations” performance reflects Tipo's talent throughout, its high stature, elegance, and captivating improvisational quality unparalleled.

It's believed this “Goldberg Variations” recording was unavailable for at least a decade or more, both domestically and as an import, making this reissue a long-awaited return.

The audio source has been remastered for high fidelity, rendering the finer details more vivid.

Mastering was performed with careful attention to overall balance, allowing listeners to experience Tipo's musical vision more fully than ever before.
