A beautiful mid-20th century Romanian handblown art glass basket, most probably by Vitrometan Mediaș, known for producing striking decorative glass during the 1960s and 1970s.
Crafted in clear turquoise glass with a vibrant cased mottled pattern of dark red, brown, white, and hints of deep blue, this basket features a ruffled rim, a twisted applied handle, and a four-point folded base. The bold colours and intricate shaping make it an excellent example of Eastern European glass design from this period.
Vitrometan Mediaș was a Romanian glassworks based in the town of Mediaș, in Transylvania, active primarily during the mid-20th century, especially from the 1950s through the 1980s. The factory became known for producing vibrant handblown decorative glass, often made for export under the state-controlled “IAS Romania” label. Typical pieces include vases, baskets, bowls, and sculptural forms featuring bold colour combinations, applied twisted handles, ruffled rims, and folded or star-shaped bases. Their glass often used bright turquoise, amber, ruby, and mottled multicolour cased effects, making them visually striking and highly collectible today among mid-century glass enthusiasts.
