"Usaburo" Kokeshi featuring a cute rabbit with a white face and vivid kimono. This kokeshi was the catalyst for character kokeshi creation. It is a palm-sized decoration that fits in a small space in your room.

Usaburo Kokeshi's founder Usaburo Okamoto was born in Haruto Village in Taisho 6 (1917) and started making kokeshi in Showa 25 (1950). Combining traditional lathe techniques with special machining methods incorporating brush painting carving and baked patterns he pioneered a new artistic style. The three-dimensional baked patterns that can express depth are a new technique devised by Usaburo. The basic form of Usaburo Kokeshi features a round-bodied bobbed hairstyle. Its simple streamlined form exudes a touch of archaic Eastern beauty and its design quality is recognized even in overseas markets.

In Showa 36 (1961) the first Gunma Prefecture Kokeshi Contest was held sparking competition in design development and technical prowess. Usaburo Kokeshi has been entered every year pouring heartfelt dedication into each stroke and has received numerous awards in the All Japan Kokeshi Contest. There are currently six artists in charge of design. They carry on the legacy of the first generation Usaburo fervently passing down their artisan skills.
