Gunma Prefecture is the largest producer of creative kokeshi dolls in Japan. The 1st All Gunma Kokeshi Contest was held in 1961 showcasing the design and technological prowess of the artists. Usaburo Kokeshi is exhibited every year with each stroke infused with deep thoughts winning numerous awards at the All Japan Kokeshi Contest. Usaburo's kokeshi dolls are made using premium materials such as beautifully grained "Keyaki" (zelkova) as well as "Kuri" (chestnut) and "Sakura" (cherry) among others. Additionally the technique to express three-dimensionality through burnt patterns is a new method devised by Usaburo. Created with heartfelt strokes these traditional crafts from Gunma Prefecture the Usaburo Kokeshi are perfect as a Japanese souvenir or a gift for your loved ones.
