Florent was a beloved 24-hour French-style diner located at 69 Gansevoort Street in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, that operated from 1985 until its closure in 2008. Opened by Frenchman Florent Morellet, who transformed the existing R&L Diner into a vibrant, inclusive gathering place while keeping many of its classic features like the Formica counter, the space became a cultural crucible—welcoming butchers, night-club regulars, drag performers, sex workers, artists, and activists—blurring the lines between day and night life in downtown New York. Morellet's bold honesty about his HIV diagnosis—posting his T-cell counts on the specials board—alongside his activism, living will giveaways, and community spirit made Florent not just a restaurant, but a sanctuary in a turbulent era. Its graphic identity, designed by Tibor Kalman and Douglas Riccardi of M&Co., is now part of museum collections, highlighting its cultural impact.
