FAQ about the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor:
FAQ1: What does a MAF Sensor do?
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor measures the amount of air flow entering the intake manifold using a heated grid or wire. The PCM uses this signal primarily for fuel control.
FAQ2: Where are these sensors located?
The Mass Air Flow sensor is located in the intake ducting after the air filter.
FAQ3: What are the common causes of failure?
Typically these sensors fail due to exposure to the under hood heat from engine operation or if debris collects on the sensor element.
FAQ4: How to check the MAF work or not?
Defective and dirty air mass sensors deliver faulty signals: Black Smoke; Power Shortage; Minimal operation
FAQ5: How to replace the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF):
- a. Position MAF sensor in the vehicle. Make sure the airflow direction indicated on the sensor is toward the engine.
- b. Install sensor to air duct seal(s), if so equipped, on the replacement MAF sensor.
- c. Connect the MAF sensor to the throttle body air cleaner ducts. If the sensor mounts directly on the throttle body, install and tighten the mounting screws to 10 ft-lb. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN!
- d. Position clamps over the air duct/MAF sensor connections and tighten. Replace the clamps if necessary. (NOTE: For the MAF sensor to work properly, the sensor/air duct connections must be airtight.)
- e. CAREFULLY plug the harness connector lead into the MAF sensor.
