Jimmies of Savin Rock traces its beginnings to 1925, when Jimmie Gagliardi and his family opened a modest food stand labeled “Moxie” near the bustling Savin Rock Amusement Park in West Haven, Connecticut. The stand quickly gained fame for its invention of the split hot dog—a frankfurter sliced down the middle and grilled flat to cook faster, catering to trolley conductors and hurried amusement park-goers. As popularity soared, the business expanded: by the late 1930s it had transitioned into the first actual Jimmies-branded building (1935–1952), and by 1954, after a two-year construction period, the current landmark location on Rock Street had opened, drawing visitors from across New England. Managed by the Gagliardi family through five generations, Jimmies evolved from its humble roots into a beloved full-service seafood and grill restaurant with a scenic view of the Long Island Sound.
