Danish Isles, Sleswick, and Holstein by Tho. Kitchin, ca. 1780
Title: Map of the Danish Insles Slewwick, and Holstein. By Tho. Kitchin.
This exquisite 18th-century copperplate engraved map, beautifully hand-colored, captures the Danish duchies of Sleswick and Holstein (modern Schleswig-Holstein in Germany), and also includes Zealand Island, Lolland Island, Falster Island, and Funen Island.
Historical Context: From the 15th century, the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein were governed in a personal union under the Danish crown. Though ruled by the same monarch, each duchy maintained separate laws and administrations. The Treaty of Ribe in 1460 formalized their connection to Denmark, laying the groundwork for future territorial disputes.
Mapmaker: Thomas Kitchin (1718–1784), an esteemed English engraver and cartographer, held the title of hydrographer to the King of England. Kitchin created numerous works, including the Mitchell Map of North America (1755) and collaborated on The Large English Atlas.
