Kampfgeschwader 53 “Legion Condor” was a German bomber unit named in honor of the Luftwaffe’s involvement in the Spanish Civil War.
Operating aircraft like the Dornier Do17, Junkers Ju88, and Heinkel He111, KG53 played a key role in WWII bombing campaigns.
While flying He111s, the unit deployed the massive 1,000kg “Herman” bomb—named for its size and resemblance to Luftwaffe chief Hermann Göring.
During the harsh winter of 1942–43, KG53 supported the doomed Sixth Army at Stalingrad, camouflaging their aircraft in washable white paint.
Despite their efforts, losses were severe, and the Sixth Army surrendered on February 2, 1943, with over 100,000 captured—only 6,000 would return to Germany.
