PVC INC RGS #2 SN3 GOOSE GALLOPING GOOSE ENGINE TRAIN LOCOMOTIVE

RGS #2 Sn3 Goose Galloping Goose Engine Train Locomotive PVC Inc. Excellent condition.

Rio Grande Southern Galloping Goose, specifically resembling Goose #2.

Origin and Purpose:

The Rio Grande Southern Railroad developed the "Galloping Geese" in the 1930s during the Great Depression as a more economical way to transport freight, mail, and passengers on their narrow-gauge railway in Colorado.

Design:

These unique railcars were derived from full-sized automobiles, with the first, Goose #1, based on a Buick sedan. Goose #2, built in 1931, also used a Buick sedan body but ran on two trucks and featured an enclosed freight compartment.

Appearance:

Originally, Goose #2 was black like the Buick sedan it was derived from, but all the Geese were repainted silver in 1935.

Significance:

The Galloping Geese were crucial in extending the life of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad by providing a less costly alternative to steam trains for maintaining service to remote areas.

Preservation:

Several of the original seven Galloping Geese are preserved in museums, such as the Colorado Railroad Museum, where Goose #2 resides
