Description:

Original Photo

A striking late 19th-century cabinet card portrait of an African American officer in the Uniform Rank of the Knights of Pythias (URKP), a prestigious fraternal order that provided Black men with leadership opportunities, mutual aid, and social mobility during the post-Reconstruction era. 6.5" x 4.25" sepia toned cabinet card. The subject stands in full regalia, exuding authority and dignity. His double-breasted frock coat features two vertical rows of polished brass buttons, shoulder epaulets, and a high collar, a design emblematic of Pythian military-style dress. He wears a chapeau with an elegantly folded brim and a side plume, a distinctive feature of high-ranking members of the Uniform Rank. A ceremonial sword rests in his gloved hand, further emphasizing his status within the order. Prominently displayed on his chest are several medals and ribbons, likely denoting his rank and achievements within the lodge.

The Knights of Pythias was one of the most significant fraternal organizations for African Americans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in Ohio, where the subject was photographed. The Uniform Rank, established in 1878, was the paramilitary arm of the organization, with elaborate drill teams, parades, and officer rankings that mirrored military structures. The order provided Black men with a powerful network of support at a time when segregation and disenfranchisement severely restricted economic and civic opportunities. The presence of African American Pythians in Columbus, Ohio, where this portrait was taken by C.W. Borah’s studio at 167 South High Street, aligns with the strong presence of Black Pythian lodges in the Midwest during the 1880s–1890s. Cabinet card format with ornate studio imprint on verso. Some light spotting and age toning, but image remains sharp with excellent detail of the uniform’s embellishments. Very good condition overall. A rare and historically significant portrait documenting Black fraternal leadership in the late 19th century, capturing the pride and pageantry of the Uniform Rank of the Knights of Pythias at its height.
