Portrait Of Paul Kruger By Otto Scultz
The portrait of Paul Kruger, then President of the South African Republic, that features on the obverse of this 1892 Five Shillings coin is the work of German engraver Otto Schultz. The portrait was later revived for use on the Krugerrand, an influencial South African bullion coin.
Double Shaft 1892 South African Five Shillings
This coin is part of an initial consignment of new South African coinage that featured a notable design error to the reverse wherin the wagon to the base of the ZAR arms features two shafts and wheels of the same size. The traditional Voortrekker wagon, pulled by oxen, has a single shaft and its back wheels are larger than the front.
1892 South African Crown Mintages
Hearn in his guide to South African coinage lists a mintage of 4,327 for this rarer double-shaft variety of 1892 5 Shillings, making them significantly rarer than the more common single shaft variant (14,000).
NGC Graded ZAR Coin
This scarce South African 5s coin has been graded AU 55 by NGC (#6469219-004) and comes sealed in its holder with a standard brown label.
