Subtitle: Original 18th-Century French Map Featuring Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina
Description (EN):
This antique map, titled “Carte de la Partie Méridionale du Brésil,” was engraved by Rigobert Bonne and published in 1778 as part of the Atlas Maritime. It provides a detailed geographic overview of southern Brazil, including the regions of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais, as well as Uruguay, Paraguay, and parts of northern Argentina and Bolivia.
Bonne's cartographic style emphasizes precision and clarity, forgoing decorative elements in favor of scientific accuracy. The map includes political borders, river systems, towns, and a scale bar in French leagues. It also references the Tropic of Capricorn, and the adjacent Atlantic Ocean (Océan Méridional) with finely engraved hachuring for sea shading.
Mapmaker – Rigobert Bonne (1727–1795):
Appointed as Royal Hydrographer in 1773, Bonne succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin and produced some of the most exact cartographic works of the Enlightenment. His contributions to nautical and terrestrial maps reflect a shift from decorative aesthetics to empirical and topographic mapping, essential for navigational and scientific purposes.
