Dr. Douglas H. Smith (1928–2017)

Born February 21, 1928, in Flushing, New York, Douglas H. Smith was a passionate lifelong photographer who turned his love of nature and municipal life into art. A self‑taught shutterbug since 1945, Smith excelled in crafting vibrant color slide photography and storytelling through landscape and community‑oriented subjects. His early muse was Shelter Island, New York—a place by the water where he built a home and captured pristine sunsets, family gatherings, and coastal scenes aboard his sailboat or while picnicking near the beach. He even flew in on weekends, landing in local grassy fields to reconnect with his creative energy. We believe these shots were taken at this home.

 

In cities like Baltimore and later Manchester, Connecticut, Dr. Smith shifted his attention to urban architecture and civic life. He curated slide shows for community groups on municipal beautification, travel, wildflowers, and open‑space conservation—sparking local involvement with his visual narratives. Presentations often wove into family events, blending personal passion with civic pride.

 

His photographic work gained formal recognition: it's part of a permanent town exhibition in Manchester and has appeared in galleries nationwide.
