Zeeland was a crucial region in the Dutch Republic and a center of maritime trade and naval power. The map reflects the extensive poldering (land reclamation) that shaped much of the Netherlands. Towns like Middelburg, Vlissingen, and Zierikzee were significant ports and trade hubs during the 16th, 17th centuries.
