Title: Könige in Frankreich des Ersten Geschlechts der Merowinger von A 400 bis a 750 da die Carolinger gefolgen
Subtitle: Merovingian Kings of France – Genealogical Chart, Bodenehr 1720
Description:
This rare copperplate engraving with hand coloring offers a fascinating genealogical chart of the Merovingian dynasty, the first royal house of the Franks that ruled France from approximately 400 to 750 AD, before being succeeded by the Carolingians. The lineage begins with Pharamond and Warmund and traces the succession of rulers including Clodion, Merovech, Clovis I, and other significant figures of the early medieval Frankish monarchy.
Designed and published by Gabriel Bodenehr the Elder around 1720, this work is both a historical chart and a decorative engraving, complete with royal coats of arms, allegorical figures, and crowned emblems. The left panel features monarchs and royal ceremonies, while the text-rich chart carefully lays out dynastic successions.
This map belongs to Bodenehr’s celebrated Atlas Curieux oder Neuer und Compendieuser Atlas, a key work in early 18th-century European cartography and royal documentation.
Mapmaker:
