Antique copper engraved bird's-eye view of Varadin, modern day Orodea, in Romania, by Nicolas SANSON D'ABBEVILLE (1600-1667), from Vincenzo Coronelli.
The view shows the town's layout with its key buildings and defensive structures. The perspective is from across the Rivière de Keres (Crișul Repede River).
Under the view, some text in French:
(translation) "VARADIN, or LE GRAND VARADIN in French, WARD in Hungarian, GROSS WARDEIN in German, is a city in the County of Bihor in Upper Hungary, located on the banks of the Teyss toward Transylvania. It is the seat of a bishop under the archbishop of Colocza (Kalocsa). The Little Tartars took the city in 1242. It later fell into Transylvanian hands, but in 1660 it surrendered to the Turks after 47 days of open trench siege."
A. La Citadelle: The Citadel; B. La Ville: The town; C. L’Église de St. Ladislas: Church of St. Ladislas (patron saint of Hungary); D. Palais de l’Évêque: Bishop's Palace; E. Le Fauxbourg: The suburb (outside the city walls); F. La Rivière de Keres: The Keres (Crișul) River.
This view reflects the strategic and contested nature of Varadin during the Ottoman–Habsburg wars, especially in the 17th century.
Active from 1627, Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville was to bring about the rise of French cartography, although the fierce competition of the Dutch would last until the end of the century. His success was partly owing to the partnership with the publisher Pierre Mariette. In 1644 the latter had purchased the business of Melchior Tavernier, and helped Sanson with financial support in producing the maps. In 1657 Pierre Mariette died, however his son, also named Pierre, co-published Les Cartes Générales de toutes les parties du Monde the following year. It was the first folio French produced world atlas.
