Title: Westphalia & Rhine Antique Map – Cercles de Westphalie, Haut et Bas Rhin by Brion de la Tour, 1766
Subtitle: Original 18th-Century Map of the Imperial Circles of Westphalia and the Upper and Lower Rhine
Description:
This decorative and richly detailed copperplate engraved map shows the Imperial Circles of Westphalia, the Upper Rhine, and the Lower Rhine, regions of political and strategic importance within the Holy Roman Empire. Titled Cercles de Westphalie, Haut et Bas Rhin, it was published by Louis Brion de la Tour in collaboration with Louis-Charles Desnos.
The map is framed with a hand-colored rococo-style border and includes a charming cartouche. Place names, rivers, and political divisions are rendered with fine precision and artistry. Originally part of the monumental Atlas Général Civil et Militaire Écclésiastique Méthodique, it reflects Enlightenment-era cartographic excellence.
Mapmaker:
Louis Brion de la Tour (1756–1823), Ingénieur-Géographe du Roi, was among the leading French cartographers of the late 18th century. His work was often published in partnership with Louis-Charles Desnos, a Danish royal cartographer and map publisher based in Paris. Together, they produced some of the most refined atlases of their time.
