Title: Germany–Poland Antique Map – Cercles De Haute Et Basse Saxe by Brion de la Tour, c.1790
Subtitle: Original Hand-Colored Map of Upper and Lower Saxony with Decorative Rococo Border
Description:
This finely engraved antique map, titled Cercles De Haute Et Basse Saxe, was created by Louis Brion de la Tour and published around 1790. It depicts the historical circles of Upper and Lower Saxony (Haut et Basse Saxe)—a major administrative and territorial division of the Holy Roman Empire that included parts of modern-day Germany and Poland.
The copperplate engraving is richly hand-colored and framed with a sumptuous rococo-style floral border. A decorative title cartouche completes the aesthetic charm of this historical piece. Towns, rivers, borders, and political divisions are clearly marked, with special attention to detail across various duchies and bishoprics.
This map is not only decorative but also a valuable historical document that illustrates the fragmented geopolitical structure of the German states during the late 18th century.
Mapmaker:
Louis Brion de la Tour (1756–1823), Ingénieur Géographe du Roi, was a leading French cartographer known for precise and decorative mapmaking. His work often appeared in collaboration with Louis-Charles Desnos, royal cartographer to the King of Denmark. Together they published the influential Atlas Général Civil et Militaire Écclésiastique Méthodique, a comprehensive Enlightenment-era atlas.
