On February 25, 1944, the B-17G Dottie G of the 92nd Bomb Group, 325th Squadron, took heavy damage during a mission over Germany. After releasing bombs over the target, the crew was attacked by Messerschmitt Bf 110 fighters. Two engines were lost—one in flames—and the aircraft shook violently as pilot 2LT Clifford Beach dove 5,000 feet to extinguish the fire and regain control.
This relic originates from B-17G-1-DL Flying Fortress serial number 42-31494, a sister ship to Dottie G and part of the 92nd bomb group. On February 4, 1944, during a mission to Frankfurt, the aircraft was badly damaged by enemy fire and crash-landed near Matching, east of Harlow, England in an attempt at landing at RAF Matching Air Base AAF-166. This fragment provides a tangible link to the B-17 crews of the 92nd and their heroic service over Europe.
