Dorothy Ashby – Django / Misty
Django/Misty is a studio album by jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby released via the Philips Records label in 1984. The album features reinventions of Rodgers & Hammerstein's My Favourite Things, Thelonious Monk's Round Midnight, Erroll Garner's Misty, and Antonio Carlos Jobim's Amor En Paz. Dorothy sadly passed away from cancer two years after releasing this record. As an African-American women in Jazz she was a trailblazer, working her way through the Detroit club scene in the the 50s and 60s whilst simultaneously releasing highly-acclaimed albums as a band leader, and pioneering a unique fusion style 'Afro-Harping’ - pushing the boundaries of jazz by infusing elements of Afro, Soul and Funk. Dorothy may have even been the first harpist to incorporate improvisation into her music.
