KING PHILIP IV (SPAIN) - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 05/09/1658 CO-SIGNED BY: COUNTESS OF SALVATIERRA (ANTONIA MARCELA DE ACUÑA Y GUZMAN) - HFSID 53280
KING PHILIP IV (FELIPE DOMINGO VICTOR DE LA CRUZ) and COUNTESS OF SALVATIERRA (ANTONIA MARCELA DE ACUÑA Y GUZMAN)
The King Philip IV responds to a letter sent by the Countess of Salvatierra (signing with old Spanish signature) in which she informs him of the good health and spirits of his son the prince Felipe Próspero de Austria, the visit of Friar Antonio Del Castillo and the suspicion of the Queen's pregnancy. The King responds joyful for the goodwill of his son and saying he did not really believe the Queen was pregnant.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Yo, El Rey F." and "La condesa de Salbatiera" in iron gall ink. 8½x11½, folded. 17x11½, flat. Two pages. Fully Translated in English:" May God protect His Highness, he is so cute and grown up that when Your Majesty sees him is going to be scared, Friar Antonio Del Castiillo arrived this evening and spent a lot of time with His Highness. He was very well welcome and was blissful to see His Highness. The weather is awful, the rain does not stop and we are just waiting for the heat. I have been told about the suspicion of Her Majesty, Our Lord will decide. May God give Your Majesty countless years of life, and the Christianity. Madrid, May 8. The Countess of Salbatiera/ I felt so much envy because Friar Antonio could see my son, but knowing that he is fine as you say, gives me patience to see him. Thank God we are all fine here. Despite the weather has been way better today, we are coming back not this Saturday but the next one. I also have little trust in the suspicion, because the headaches make it doubtful. May God protect you, Aranjuez, May 9, 1658. I, The King F."
PHILIP IV of Spain (1605-1665) ruled from 1621 over a Spanish empire that was at the height of its territorial expansion but beginning its economic and military decline. A pious king who also lavishly supported the arts, Philip enjoyed some foreign policy successes early in his reign but was increasingly hard pressed to raise funds for Spain's many wars, including the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). The king had many children by his two wives and one mistress but did not father a surviving male heir until 1661. Antonia Marcela de Acuña Y Guzman was the wife of 2nd Count of Salvatierra Don Garcia Sarmiento de Sotomayor and became the Countess of Salvatierra. Her husband was also a Spanish Viceroy of New Spain and Peru. Sealed. Multiple mailing folds. Slightly wrinkled and toned. Edges lightly frayed and worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
