The Inuit people have a rich heritage of carvings and this particular piece is a prime example of their craftsmanship. This soapstone carving features a family of seals in their natural habitat. The piece is signed Ullalaq in syllabics. You are sure to appreciate the fine detailing in this Canadian Aboriginal carving, which is a true testament to their unique culture.

The main expert at the most preeminent Canadian art auction house, stated that the signature was Ullalaq, and that multiple experts including himself were unaware of any artist other than Judas Ullaq with that signature. According to several experts that saw the piece, it was not prototypical of Judas Ullalaq’s work. However , it was said that he knew Judas and that he was known to make experimental pieces.

For your perusal, I have included some pictures of other pieces that are not prototypical of Judas’ work that were his. Particularly, the first of these with a mouth and facial lines nearly identical to the piece listed; and several others showing Judas’ predilection for including young figures carried by older larger ones. Unfortunately, I do not have providence on this piece. Regardless, it is a marvelous piece that has been expertly and uniquely carved.

The eyes and spots are inlaid with what seems to be a hard leathery substance.
