Features:
This netsuke is a wonderful example of Japanese craftsmanship and would make a perfect addition to any netsuke or Asian art collection.
Netsuke are miniature sculptures that originated in Japan during the Edo period (1603–1868). Initially created as practical accessories, netsuke served as toggles to secure small pouches (such as inro) to the sash (obi) of traditional kimono, which lacked pockets.
Over time, these small objects evolved into highly detailed and expressive works of art.
Crafted from wood and other traditional materials, netsuke were often carved with incredible skill and imagination.
They feature a wide range of subjects, including animals, mythological figures, gods, folklore scenes, and humorous characters.
Cultural Significance: Netsuke are a window into the everyday life, religion, and humor of old Japan. Each piece tells a story.
Artistic Craftsmanship: Many netsuke are signed by their makers and exhibit extraordinary detail and expression despite their small size.
Tactile Beauty: Netsuke are meant to be held. The smooth, aged surface and compact form make them deeply satisfying to handle.
Historical Value: Authentic antique netsuke reflect centuries of Japanese tradition and aesthetics.
Today, netsuke are cherished by collectors around the world not only for their functionality and rarity but for their deep artistic and historical value.
