🖼️ Victoria, Empress of Germany, NPG Licensed Print in Exceptional Gesso Frame

Giclée print, framed under glass. Ready to hang.

A richly atmospheric reproduction of NPG 4430 Victoria, Empress of Germany and Queen of Prussia, originally photographed by Joseph Mordecai and held in the National Portrait Gallery collection. This exceptionally high-quality giclée print has been mounted and presented in a museum-grade antique-style frame. We do not say that lightly. This frame is of extraordinary quality. Heavy, detailed, perfect.

And what makes this piece especially distinctive is that frame — a beautifully detailed and weighty gesso-on-wood frame in the high Rococo style, with ornate shell and foliate motifs, scrolled corners, and deep gilt moulding. This is not a decorative effect but a substantial artisan-crafted surround more typical of 19th-century portraiture.

The print is protected behind glass and remains in excellent condition, with strong tonal contrast and subtle texture faithfully capturing the period photograph. A brass gallery plaque from The Frame Centre, Petersfield, is affixed to the reverse.

🧾 Provenance & Authenticity

🖋️ About the Subject

Victoria, Princess Royal (1840–1901), eldest daughter of Queen Victoria, later became German Empress and Queen of Prussia through her marriage to Frederick III. A strong and highly intelligent woman, her legacy is tied closely to the tumultuous politics of 19th-century Europe. The original photograph was taken by Joseph Mordecai, with rights retained by the NPG.

📦 Condition

Excellent condition overall. The print shows no visible fading, foxing, or damage. Frame is structurally sound and presents a rich aged patina — the deliberate finish on this gesso moulding includes light antiquing and oxidised gold detail. Hanging wire intact and ready to display.

Please note the piece is considerably heavier than it appears, owing to its solid wood and gesso construction and thick glass front, so please account for that when planning to hang it.
