LOVELY STERLING SILVER NOVELTY STAMP BOX as a COAL SCUTTLE
by SAUNDERS & SHEPHERD 1908
This is a wonderful sterling silver novelty Stamp Box in the form of a Coal Scuttle made by the makers of fine small silver items 'CS*FS' (for the noted London / Birmingham silversmiths Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders & James Francis Hollings Shepherd) and was assayed in Chester for 1908. It is depicted as a really beautifully modelled coal scuttle with hinged (very tightly sprung – I had to use a matchstick to hold it open to get a photo of the gilded interior) door with a glass window to accept a specimen stamp, and a handle above. The above maker's and hallmarks are struck crisp and clear to its back - see detailed photographs.
It measures 1 1/2" (4cm) D x 1 1/4" (3.25cm) H x 1" (2.5cm) W approx; and is in excellent condition with no defect at all to report apart from light wear consistent with its age and the slightest bend to the left-hand side of the handle - see photograph & details.
This is a superb period novelty stamp box from a very good maker which is in excellent condition and with a realistic, yet still low start price should get considerable interest from all collectors.
