Kutani is a type of Japanese porcelain that was made in the city of Kaga, modern territory of Ishikawa Prefecture. Kutani ceramics are also called "Old Kutani", which is usually called porcelain products decorated with overglaze painting.

Oishi Yoshio (1659-1703), also known as Oishi Kuranosuke, was the leader of the Forty-seven Ronin, a group of samurai who avenged the death of their lord by killing Kira Yoshinaka, the courtier who instigated the incident that led to it, in the famous story of Chushingura.
