Barbara Cooney's first book to be both written and illustrated by her (the fact that this is her debut as a writer is acknowledged on the rear flap). King of Wreck Island is set in a small village on the coast of Maine in the Blueberryville/Acadia region. 

Over the course of Coony's long and successful career, she was to receive two Caldecott Medals (1959, 1980) and a National Book Award (1982). In 1994, Cooney was the U.S. nominee for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award, the highest international recognition for creators of children's books.
