A are antique Spanish Colonial retablo of St. Jerome. Painted on tin and framed on a vintage period frame with stars. Measures approx. 14” x 10” and with frame 16 ½” x 13”. Unusual small cross painted on back.

St. Jerome is revered as the patron saint of librarians, translators, scholars, and biblical scholars due to his extensive work on translating the Bible and his contributions to the Catholic Church, even though he is considered the patron saint of archaeologists and students as well He was a 4th century Church Father who lived as a hermit in the Syrian desert. He died in Bethlehem in 420 and is buried in the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. Jerome's work made the Bible more accessible. He is known for saying, "Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ". His translations and commentaries are still used today
