渡辺禎雄氏は、日本独特の染色工芸の「型染」を布地だけでなく和紙にも応用し、日本古来からの民芸的技法から渡辺禎雄独自の「型染版画」を芸術的価値の高いものとして築き上げ、自由とユーモアに満ちた美術作品を制作している。氏の作品は目で見るものと心で感じ取るものとの極めて精神的な出会いをもたらし、聖書の音信を新鮮に受け止める機会を与え国内外から高い評価を得ている。
■渡辺禎雄氏略歴（1913～1996）
1913年東京に生まれる。1941年芹沢銈介氏に師事、型染版画に取り組む。1947年の第一回日本民藝館賞の受賞をはじめ、1958年ニューヨーク聖ジェームズ教会主催の「現代日本版画展」に『青銅の蛇』を出品、一等賞受賞、その他国画賞等々、多数受賞され、1993年には日本キリスト教文化協会よりキリスト教功労者として表彰された。作品は国立近代美術館、大原美術館、ニューヨーク近代美術館、大英博物館、バチカン近代宗教美術館など世界各地の美術館に収蔵されている。1996年1月8日に天に召されるまで、日本基督教団目白教会員、版画芸術院会員、キリスト教美術協会会員として活躍した。
■About Watanabe Sadao's Bible Prints
Watanabe Sadao applies the uniquely Japanese dyeing craft of "katazome" to not only fabrics but also to washi paper, and has created his own unique "katazome prints" of high artistic value from traditional Japanese folk art techniques, producing artworks full of freedom and humor. His works bring about a highly spiritual encounter between what is seen with the eyes and what is felt with the heart, providing an opportunity to receive the message of the Bible in a fresh way, and have been highly praised both in Japan and overseas.
■Brief biography of Watanabe Sadao (1913-1996)
Born in Tokyo in 1913. In 1941, he studied katazome prints under Serizawa Keisuke. He received the first Japan Folk Crafts Museum Award in 1947, submitted his work Bronze Snake to the Contemporary Japanese Print Exhibition sponsored by St. James's Church in New York in 1958, where it won first prize, and received numerous other awards, including the Kokuga Award. In 1993, he was recognized as a Christian Meritorious Person by the Japan Christian Culture Association. His works are housed in museums around the world, including the National Museum of Modern Art, Ohara Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art in New York, British Museum, and the Vatican Museum of Modern Sacred Art. Until his passing on January 8, 1996, he was an active member of Mejiro Church of the United Church of Christ in Japan, a member of the Print Art Academy, and a member of the Christian Art Association.
