ADH often has an onset age of 7, but this disorder can continue through the teen years and well into adulthood. According to the NIH’s National Institute of Mental Health, “the number of children being diagnosed with ADHD is increasing, but it is unclear why.” Most physicians and research indicate that the increase in ADHD is directly linked to the food we eat. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and impaired verbal and non-verbal communication. There is no known cure for ASD.
Fixing nutrient deficiencies can also have positive effects for kids with autism or ADHD. Because of their inability to properly digest food and absorb nutrients, many children with these disorders may be low in zinc, magnesium, B vitamins, iron, essential fatty acids, and other nutrients. Lack of magnesium, for instance, can cause hyperactivity-like behavior, sound sensitivity, and irritability. Zinc deficiency, a result of a defect in zinc metabolism that's common in autistic children and can be exacerbated by diets high in white flour and other high-hypoglycemic foods, can change a child's sense of taste and smell.
