The Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic was one of the 15 republics that made up the Soviet Union. It was formed on 21 July 1940 by a decision of the extraordinary parliament of the Republic of Estonia (the "Declaration of State Authority in Estonia"). On 8 May 1990, the Supreme Council of the Estonian SSR declared the restoration of the independent Republic of Estonia. Independence was confirmed by the Supreme Council of Estonia on 20 August 1991 and recognised by a decision of the State Council of the USSR on 6 September 1991.
