Previous issue: Ida B. Wells was a pioneering investigative journalist, suffragist, and civil rights activist, who co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Wells used her powerful voice to speak out against and investigate lynching and other social injustices against Black people. She traveled across the nation and internationally, shedding light on state-sanctioned violence, despite dangers she faced. She was also an active participant in the women's club and suffrage movements and later engaged in social work in the growing city of Chicago.

The 15th coin in the program, she was a writer, composer, educator, and political activist for Native American rights. Her advocacy led to the passage of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924 which granted American Indians U.S. citizenship while maintaining their tribal standing. Zitkala-Ša (translated “Red Bird”) was born a member of the Yankton Dakota Sioux on South Dakota’s Yankton Indian Reservation. She received an education through a white missionary boarding school in Wabash, Indiana that prohibited Native American customs and traditions.. She died on January 26, 1938, in Washington, DC. She is buried at Arlington National Cemetery with her husband.

The 2024 Celia Cruz Quarter is the 14th coin in the series. She was a Cuban-American singer, cultural icon, and one of the most popular Latin artists of the 20th century. She was born Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso in Havana, Cuba, on October 21, 1925. She grew up in the working-class neighborhood of Santos Suárez, where she was exposed to diverse musicians and performers who influenced her future singing career. She died in New Jersey on July 16, 2003. Cruz’s influence reached well beyond her music. The Maria Tallchief Quarter is the tenth coin in the series release October 23, 2023. She is widely considered the first American prima ballerina. She broke barriers as a Native American ballet dancer, exhibiting strength and resilience both on and off the stage. Tallcheif was born on January 24, 1925 in Fairfax, Oklahoma on the Osage reservation. She began dance lessons as a young girl and excelled at dance and playing piano. At the age of 17, she moved to New York City to pursue her dreams of becoming a ballerina. She was selected as an apprentice in the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, the premier Russian ballet company in the United States. This Quarter is the sixth coin in the series. She was the first African American and first Native American woman pilot. She was also the first African American to earn an international pilot’s license. Coleman was born on January 26, 1892 in Atlanta, Texas during a time of overt racism and segregation laws. After being refused admission into every U.S. flying school she approached, Coleman learned French. She traveled to Paris in 1920 to attend the well-known Caudron Brothers’ School of Aviation in Le Crotoy, France. She was the only student of color in her class. She died on April 30, 1926 as a passenger in a practice flight for a celebration in Jacksonville, Florida. Her flying career, although brief, inspires many young African Americans to pursue the field of aviation. Her legacy continues through the establishment of aviation clubs and tributes, including the 1995 U.S. postal stamp issued in her honor. |
