This milk pale was constructed and designed by the Tutsi People of Rwanda. For many people in Central Africa, cattle herding was an essential aspect of life. Milk was an important source of nutrition and was collected in these unique, cylindrical wooden vessels that predate the use of plastic in the household. When the vessels required repairs, metal was often used to restore and prolong their function.  Skilfully carved from a single block of wood, this milk container has a clean cylindrical shape. The flat metal highlights is the tradition method used for repairing the cracks in the wood, thus allowing it longer use.  This form of traditional repair adds a special touch to this beautiful historic piece.
