The most common cause of starter motor failure is wear and tear on the built-in brushes due to aging.

When the brushes wear out, debris gets stuck in the moving parts, and the starter motor is no longer able to rotate at a sufficient speed to get the engine going.

As a result, symptoms such as the engine not starting in one go, or it taking longer than usual for the engine to start (a longer operating noise) begin to appear.
