ABOUT THE ARTIST: Dorothea Tanning (1910–2012) was an American surrealist painter, sculptor, and writer. Known for her dreamlike and often unsettling imagery, Tanning's work explores themes of transformation, identity, and psychological states. Initially influenced by surrealism, she became closely associated with the movement, though her style evolved throughout her career. Her paintings often feature ambiguous, otherworldly figures and scenes, combining elements of the real and the imaginary. Tanning was married to artist Max Ernst, and her work includes both abstract and figurative elements. In addition to painting, she also created significant works in sculpture, collage, and writing. Tanning is considered one of the key female figures in the surrealist movement.
