"Hero City of Ukraine" is an honorary award established by the President of Ukraine on March 6, 2022 to celebrate the feat, mass heroism and resilience of citizens shown in the defense of their cities during the repulse of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.[1][2]
The Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 111/2022 emphasizes that the purpose of this decision is to honor "the feat, mass heroism and resilience of citizens shown in the defense of their cities during the repulse of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine." Commenting on this decision, President Zelenskyi noted that the new title is reminiscent of the former title of hero city, which was founded in the USSR and was awarded for distinction in the Second World War: then, according to Zelenskyi, hero cities withstood "another onslaught, but very a similar crowd. A different invasion, but no less brutal invasion."
As of June 2022, 10 Ukrainian cities have been awarded the distinction.
